Benefits of Service

Benefits of Full-Time AmeriCorps Service with Montana Campus Compact

Joining the MTCC AmeriCorps program is about making a tangible difference for people and communities across Montana. Our members address critical issues in our state such as poverty, educational equity, and veteran services. In addition to making an impact in communities and with people, you’ll receive the following benefits:

Financial Support: Full-time MTCC National Service Members receive a bi-weekly living allowance to ensure that their basic needs can be met. They are also eligible for health insurance, childcare assistance, and relocation assistance. Members who successfully complete a full service term receive a $4,400 Segal AmeriCorps Education Award upon successfully completing their service term. This award may be used to repay qualifying student loans or for future education. Many colleges in Montana match education award funds up to $1,000 per academic year. Nationwide, over 600 Schools of National Service implement similar policies.

Professional Development: All full-year MTCC AmeriCorps members participate in Pre-Service Orientation, the Community Building Institute, the Building Engaged Citizens training, ServeMontana Symposium, and a Close of Service training. Except for the Community Building Institute, all trainings are held in-person, allowing members to learn and reflect with the entire cohort of MTCC AmeriCorps members.*  Trainings focus on information specific to service, life after service, and how to engage with Montana communities. Members are also provided with site-specific training during their first week of service and throughout the year. Lastly, members participate in AmeriCorps cohort video calls several times per month, giving them a chance to reconnect, collaborate, and receive additional training.

Beyond training opportunities, service with MTCC is a valuable opportunity to develop professional skills and form connections that will prove beneficial in your future career. Montana’s nonprofit sector is an active, close-knit community. The people you meet will serve you well as mentors and references. Who knows? They might even offer you a job after your time with AmeriCorps comes to an end!

As a final note, all MTCC National Service members are eligible for hiring preferences with Employers of National Service, and MTCC VISTA members (but not AmeriCorps Leaders) receive Non-Competitive Hiring Eligibility at federal agencies.

*Please note: As the COVID-19 situation develops, MTCC will determine whether it will be safe to resume in-person trainings in the 2021-2022 service year. Trainings will occur virtually if it is deemed necessary to protect the health of our members and those they serve.

Supportive Cohort Experience: During your service year, MTCC provides ongoing support and guidance thanks to our dedicated staff, regular trainings, and twice-yearly visits to your AmeriCorps host site. You will also make new connections as part of the MTCC AmeriCorps cohort – many of our members leave their service year with life-long friendships and memorable experiences, such as group camping trips!

Lastly, you will become a part of the nationwide AmeriCorps Alumni Network, where you can continue to engage with service after your time with MTCC.
