My Journey with Soft Landing Missoula’s Girls Leadership Council by Lorraine Gardner
In the community of Missoula, Montana, Soft Landing Missoula stands as a welcoming place for refugees and immigrants. As a dedicated member of this organization, my experience has been both rewarding and transformative, particularly through my involvement with the Girls
Leadership Council. This initiative is tailored to empower female high school refugee students, fostering leadership skills, cultural connections, and invaluable mentorship.
Soft Landing Missoula’s Girls Leadership Council is a testament to the organization’s commitment to holistic refugee integration. Created for female high school students, this council serves as a platform where young minds from diverse cultural backgrounds converge every other week. The overarching goal is to cultivate leadership skills and forge connections that go beyond cultural differences, laying the foundation for a more inclusive community.
The core of the Girls Leadership Council lies in its engaging and purposeful activities. Every other week, students participate in activities that allow them to integrate and thrive in the
community. From rock climbing at the local gym to resume workshops, each session is a step towards empowerment and self-discovery. These activities not only enhance leadership skills but also provide a safe space for the girls to express themselves freely.
At the heart of this transformative program is the mentorship model. Each student is paired with a mentor, creating a personalized support system that goes beyond the confines of traditional education. I have had the privilege of being a mentor, witnessing firsthand the positive impact this model has on the lives of these young individuals.
As a mentor to one of the students, I’ve had the joy of introducing her to the vibrant activities Missoula has to offer. Beyond academics, this mentorship has become a bridge to new experiences and opportunities, helping her navigate the intricacies of her new community. The bond created through mentorship has not only empowered her but has also allowed me to gain valuable insights into her world, fostering mutual understanding and friendship.
The importance of mentorship in the Girls Leadership Council cannot be overstated. It acts as a catalyst for positive change, creating a ripple effect that extends beyond the individual. As these young leaders grow, they become ambassadors of inclusivity, breaking down barriers and building bridges between cultures. Mentorship becomes a guiding force that propels them toward a future filled with possibilities.
Beyond the weekly sessions and mentor outings, one of the most impactful events that we organized for the group was an overnight winter retreat. During this retreat the girls were able to go sledding with their mentors, a new experience for many of the participants. This was followed by a dinner made by the students, bonding activities, and a late night dance party. The retreat created a setting of joy and comfort, as the students engaged in meaningful conversations with one another. Soft Landing Missoula’s Girls Leadership Council is a testament to the power of community, mentorship, and empowerment.
