The Value of Service by Gabriela Rodriguez-Velez
I joined AmeriCorps with a strong desire to immerse myself in a new community, foster lasting connections, and make a meaningful impact through a year of service. Over the past nine months, I have had the privilege of engaging with a diverse group of students, ranging from ninth graders to second-year college graduates and individuals returning to education later in life. This experience has reinforced my belief that service to the community, especially to those in greater need, is a fundamental responsibility that everyone should undertake at some point in their lives.
Through AmeriCorps, I have had the opportunity to organize and facilitate various service activities for my students, a process that has been both rewarding and transformative. It began with the Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service Read for Peace program. I engaged four enthusiastic high school students to participate in reading and interactive activities with elementary students at a local school. Despite initial apprehensions about public speaking, the high schoolers embraced the challenge and pushed past their fears to connect and engage with the young students. Witnessing their growth and confidence throughout the day was truly inspiring, as they eagerly expressed their desire to participate in similar activities in the future.
While our interactions with the elementary students were limited to a few occasions, I am grateful that my students remained open-minded about participating in various service opportunities. We transitioned to volunteering at a local tribal commodity program, where we assisted in restocking the grocery floor and aiding shoppers with their needs. This experience not only provided valuable support to the community but also empowered the high schoolers to inspire their peers to join our collective efforts in the warehouse. The ripple effect of their involvement showcased the transformative power of service and the importance of leading by example.
Service, at its core, embodies values of selflessness, empathy, and a commitment to improving the lives of others. It fosters connections, builds bridges across diverse communities, and promotes a culture of compassion and inclusivity. Through active engagement in service activities, individuals and organizations can create a lasting impact, instill a sense of purpose, and contribute to the collective well-being of society. Service is not just a responsibility, it is a privilege and an opportunity to leave a lasting legacy of impact and change.
As I reflect on my experience with AmeriCorps and the incredible journey of service alongside my students, I am reminded of the profound significance of selfless acts of kindness and the transformative power they hold. My time here has been immensely rewarding, primarily due to the opportunity to witness the transformative effect of service on my students. As they embark on their own service journeys, I am filled with hope and pride, knowing that they are equipped with the values and skills necessary to make a positive difference in their communities and beyond. Their enthusiasm and dedication serve as a testament to the power of service in shaping individuals, fostering empathy, and building a more connected and compassionate society. It is my most sincere hope that they continue their journeys throughout their time in school and beyond. May we all embrace the value of service and seek opportunities to uplift others.
