Community Building Institute

Description

The Community Building Institute is a foundational webinar series that prepares early-career public professionals, and aspiring changemakers of all kinds, to address community needs in a responsible, equitable, and inclusive manner by centering the voices of community stakeholders. This is accomplished by educating participants on the six-step community building cycle.

Summary of Sessions

Community Assessment

Participants will learn about strategies for performing a community assessment to identify needs within a community, and to discover what strategies are already being used to address those needs. They will learn about the importance of communicating directly with community members when developing a project.

Stakeholder Engagement

Participants will learn about the different types of stakeholders they may encounter in community projects. They will gain understanding of the identification of key stakeholders, the assessment of stakeholder composition and engagement, and effective stakeholder communication.

Stakeholder Involvement

Participants will learn about the importance of assembling an advisory group to keep projects accountable to community stakeholders. They will gain an understanding of the many forms that community advisory groups can take and develop a greater understanding of effective meeting facilitation.

Strategic Planning

Participants will learn about articulating a clear, appropriate, and strong mission and vision. They will gain an understanding of how they can best help a team to navigate differing viewpoints to achieve compromise and consensus during the strategic planning process.

Strategic Plan Implementation

Participants will learn about setting goals and timelines for implementing a strategic plan. They will gain an understanding of guiding stakeholders through times of transition by utilizing effective change management to keep a team inspired and the community informed.

Project Evaluation

Participants will learn about planning for a project by identifying key inputs, outputs, and outcomes. They will gain an understanding of why they should incorporate forms of assessment throughout the lifetime of a project and how they can use the data they collect to plan for the future while communicating a narrative of impact.

Format

The Community Building Institute is a synchronous webinar series presented via the Zoom video conferencing platform. Guest presenters address the fundamentals of the daily topic and provide opportunities for questions and participant discussion.

Microcredential

All participants in the Community Building Institute are eligible to receive a microcredential* from the University of Montana. The cost of this credential is fully covered by the registration fee. You can review the microcredential on Credly. For full eligibility criteria, you can review the course syllabus below.

*A microcredential is a digital form of certification indicating demonstrated competency or mastery in a specific skill or set of skills. It can be added to LinkedIn, resumes, social media, websites, etc. in order to verify the skills you have developed to employers and other individuals.
